The search engine giant Google announced on Monday that they will be testing domain registration service, that is called Google Domains. It is still in invited-only beta, but it will soon become a big competitor to all big domain registrars, such as Godaddy.
Unlike Godaddy, Google has not planned to launch the web hosting services. However, it is just a matter of time before Google makes that move. If that happens, many hosting companies will face big competition from Google as well. Big hosting companies, such as HostGator, Bluehost and Godaddy will need to come up with new marketing plans to compete with Google.
Anyway, currently, Google’s domain registration service will cost about $12 per year, still not sure if they will be offering coupon codes or promotions to get customers, or they might not need them because we all know and trust Google. According to their research, there are currently more than 55% of small business do not have a website, and Google wants a big chunk of those percentage. The types of services that Google will be offering including no additional cost for private registration, easy domain forwarding, customizable sub-domains, etc.
With Google’s plan of launching domain registration service, I believe most website owners will switch their domain to Google, because they tend to believe Google is more secure. Especially after Godaddy had the huge blackout last time, which caused thousands of websites to shutdown, people are looking for more reliable domain registrar.
On the other hand, the launch will provide big opportunities to many online website building providers, such as Wix, Weebly and Shopify.
Although it is still too early to how it will go, Google’s move on domain registration service will definitely have big impacts on most domain registrar companies, as well as many web hosting companies.
