How To Start Email Marketing for Beginners

Email marketing is one of the most cost-effective ways to generate sales if you do it the right way. In the digital marketing community, we have heard a lot about how the money is in the list, and how successful digital marketers can generate thousands of dollars in one day from their lists. For example, one of my friends who is specialized in email marketing is able to generate at least 1 thousand dollars per day. I wouldn’t believe him when he told me that until he showed me his Paypal account. Of course, he put in a lot of work, effort, and dedication in order to generate such income. My point is just like any online marketing, it all takes tremendous amount of work and dedication in order to be successful. Anyway, as a beginner to email marketing, it is very important to start it out the right way, to know all the rules and regulation, and to use the right tools for email marketing. In this article, I will help you get started with email marketing.

Three Types of Email Marketing:

1. Direct Email

This is type of email marketing is the most popular one and the least effective one. However, a lot of email marketers are using it. Basically, you directly promote a product or service to a list of customers or prospects, in hope of they will purchase it. Of course, you can generate sales if such product or service is really good, and your list is really targeted. You can either have your own list, or rent the list from service companies. Building own list is very time consuming, so most often, email marketers will go to a third party and rent the list. In general, direct Email is not the best way to generate sales, because people don’t usually trust you; it takes time for people to trust you and then buy from you.

2. Advertising in Email

If you don’t have a list, if you don’t want to rent the list, and if you don’t want to write anything, you can advertising your product or service in other people’s emails newsletters. The cost of such service usually pretty high, and it is very hard to find a good vendor who has a very good list and willing to put your ads on it.

3. Retention Email

Retention email is getting popular in recent years. Instead of directly promoting certain product or service to subscribers, email marketers start to build their brands and customer loyalty first by sending out weekly newsletter. Sometimes, newsletters might contain promotional products or services, but they are usually very minimum. The main goal of retention email is to provide value to subscribers, and build a long term relationship.

Out of the three types of email marketing, retention email is the best practice and the right way to start Email marketing for you. Now in order to start an Email marketing, you need to build a list. There are many way to start building your list. One of the most popular way to start a niche website. For example, if you are into weight loss, you can start a weight loss niche website, so that website is all about weight loss.

Start Building a Website:

To start a website, you will need a domain and a place to hosting your website. My recommendation for hosting company is HostGator or Bluehost.

Bluehost provides you a free domain for a year, whereas HostGator has outstanding tech supports and customer services.

The sign up process is pretty easy, you just go to Bluehost or HostGator, and begin to sign up.

Building a WordPress Website:

After you have signed up the plan, you will receive an email that contains cPanel login information. Login to your cPanel, you will see an icon that is labeled “WordPress”, click on it, following the instruction there, and install WordPress on your domain. The process should be very straightforward; nothing tricky about that.

After you have done that, you will able to login to WordPress back-end.

If this is your first time using WordPress, it might take you awhile to get familiarize with the platform. I think the best approach here is for you to go to Youtube, and watch few videos about WordPress for beginners. After that, you can start adding pages and posts to your website.

Hosting Your Mailing List

While you continue adding more content to your website, it is time to start thinking implementing optin form to your website, so that you can start building your own list, creating email templates, and sending out emails.

The best tool out that can accomplish all of those is Aweber.

Aweber is an email marketing web tool that can help you make the whole process a lot easier. Without a good email marketing tool, you might face a lot of legal issue, such as email permission, so that your email doesn’t end up as spam folder, or even worse, facing any legal issue.

Integrating Aweber into WordPress

It is quite easy to integrate Aweber into WordPress. There is a WordPress plugin, AWeber Forms by Optin Cat, you can use that to implement the optin form into different places, such as popup, post boxes, and widget area in few minutes.

Great article! HostGator really has great customer service and I have been using it to host all of my sites, no bad experiences!
I’d also recommend using MailChimp, especially if they already have a mailing list (some might!). It’s very easy to use and offers a lot for free, also easy to integrate in WordPress, just like Aweber.
